A warm welcome at your first visit to Imaginationlandia, a place where fantasy runs without reins. This is Rezine's Flash Fiction Corner and it belongs in every way to You and what You make of it.
In every issue of Rezine, you'll find a cue from Summerita…that’s me! The cue may be in the form of a scene setting or a string of words or a situation describing action. It's up to you to make it more, and make it soar, giving it the wings of your imagination. We are all eager to hear what spin you give it. Whether you are a writer or a reader, we are waiting to hear your interpretation of the cue. So get ready to polish your fingertips and hit the keyboard or take up your pen, as the case maybe.
Why do we read or write fiction? It’s because stories are important to us. They reside in the slow page turner of everyday and liven up our daily routines. We listen to stories when our kids tell us about the funny way a kid answered a question in school or how inspiring they found it when the Math teacher kept on writing despite having a sprained ligament. We seek them at our workplace. Take a break from your job and you’ll see, the next day, everyone has hoards to tell you about what happened and to whom!
But while daily life snippets are interesting, we seek more drama than that. That's why we read invented stories. Because we seek thrills. The spine-chilling suspense! The heartrending romance! The brow-knitting mystery… Hearing about how your colleague answered back to the boss might be fun, but hey, saving the world? Definitely beats it. We need dramatic tales, isn't that so?
One way to get into the dramatic part is to play with what if. So that's what we'll do right now. Here's my first ever cue. I’m eager to hear what you do with it. Hope you enjoy writing to it!
The Situation
Visualize a vehicle – of any kind – stranded somewhere with no sign of help arriving quickly. Two people are trapped in that vehicle. One of them is somewhat older and quite upset about the way things are. He/she has one of those book type photo frames. The second one is handed the photo by this person to look at. There is intense and immediate reaction as the other person looks at the picture.
